Born in Nairobi and currently living in Berlin, KMRU is a sound artist and composer working in the field of field recording, improvisation, noise music and drone, and radio art. In 2020 he released three albums that showed the depth and range of his sound: Peel, a hypnotic drone LP for the avant-garde label Editions Mego; Opaquer, a collection of vivid and dreamlike sound sculptures; and Jar, a dream cassette of found sounds with an analogue setting. In addition to his work as a musician, KMRU is a key member of Black Bandcamp. He also manages the music reissues of his grandfather, the celebrated activist and musician Benga Joseph Kamaru. He is currently studying for a master’s degree in Sound Studies and Sonic Arts at Berlin University of the Arts.
