Sandro Mussida (1974) is an Italian composer and producer interested in exploring the relationship between space, sound, and time, using acoustic instruments, electronics, and experimental recording techniques to create immersive and conceptually complex works. The connection between musical tradition and modernity is also central to his research, making his work a continuous reflection on the very essence of music. One of the main aspects of Mussida’s work is his use of sound as a sculptural element. His compositions often play with the listener’s perception, exploiting the acoustic characteristics of the spaces in which they are performed. In the project Eeeehhh (2019), Mussida combines the use of directional microphones and acoustic instruments to explore the relationship between sound and architecture. His sensitivity to space brings him closer to the practices of sound art, creating a listening experience that goes beyond the simple musical dimension. In integrating traditional instruments with modern technologies, Mussida does not lose sight of the human dimension of performance. His compositions for ensemble create a dialogue between the expressiveness of acoustic instruments and processed electronic sounds, generating contrasts and harmonies of great emotional intensity. His attention to detail and sound timbre clearly emerges in his works for string quartet and experiments with modular synthesizers. His interdisciplinary collaborations with visual artists, filmmakers, and choreographers are also worth mentioning.
