Mathew Jonson (1978) is a Canadian producer, DJ, and musician who has masterfully fused analog electronic music with a melodic and rhythmic aesthetic, integrating elements of jazz improvisation. With a traditional musical background, Jonson has a natural aptitude for melody and harmony, which he incorporates into his live sets, manipulating electronic instruments in real time to deliver a unique experience to his audience.
Active since the early 2000s, he has become a central figure in the techno and house scene, thanks to his style that combines compositional complexity with emotional immediacy, live improvisation, and meticulously crafted production. Jonson uses analog equipment—vintage synthesizers, drum machines, and sequencers—to create warm, enveloping, and dynamic sounds, crafting unique sonic landscapes. Albums like Agents of Time and iconic tracks like Marionette reflect this aesthetic, with pulsating basslines, rich arpeggios, and complex grooves that immediately captivate the listener. His mastery of hardware allows him to create musical patterns that avoid the static nature of some digital productions.
In addition to his solo career, Jonson is part of significant collaborative projects like Cobblestone Jazz and Modern Deep Left Quartet, which explore the intersection of electronic music, jazz, and improvisation. At San Fedele, Mathew Jonson performs live with Freedom Engine.
