OTOLAB
Infinito Incompleto
Sound engineer: Filippo Berbenni
Two significant Italian presences grouped in a multimedia evening. The Otolab collective, in residence in San Fedele since 2012, with a new audiovisual work. At the heart of Otolab’s research is an investigation into perception, in particular on the themes of synaesthesia and the symbiotic relationship between images and sound. The collective’s works explore the perceptual deception caused by optical illusions and the construction of immersive virtual realities. Daniela Cattivelli will bring the work UIT to Milan, an attempt to reconstruct a sound environment that reproduces the acousmatic experience of a walk in a wood, with the disorientation due to the perception of sounds to which one is unable to attribute a concrete physical source. Acoustic mimicry techniques predominate mainly generated by a series of bird calls.
OTOLAB Infinito Incompleto
Infinito incompleto is a chaotic live audiovisual performance based on the use of feedback as an expressive form; The live takes up the imagery and the visual generation technique from Hemline, Otolab’s audiovisual project of 2003, recovering vintage technologies such as the Panasonic WJ-MX5 analog video mixer alongside self-built LDR mini-synths (Lumanoise) and effects digital, to explore the unrepeatable generative flow of sounds and images in real time. The techniques used in the generation of audio and video consist in the re-entry of an output signal, according to modalities regulated by some threshold limits, in correspondence with which there is an acoustically euphonic and visually rich balance zone of chaotic patterns. Infinito incompleto is an alchemical performance, unpredictable and with few certainties, with an essential score performed intuitively in total improvisation for the creation of a synthetic and hypnotic audiovisual journey. Four performers, two on video and two on audio, generate a story in continuous metamorphosis starting from minimal ideas and building illusory landscapes full of vibrant textures.
Live video: Silvio Mancini (video mixer analogico), Martino Coffa (generazione video da PC)
Live audio: Luca Pertegato (Lumanoise), Massimiliano Gusmini (mixer, feedback ed effetti)

UIT is a sound event generated through calls for birds, used as devices capable of activating a sound transfiguration process. The compositional intention of this piece is built around a mechanism of deception, a shift in use, a rethinking of the techniques and ways in which these instruments are usually used. In birdwatching (the new frontier of bucolic fun) and in hunting, the calls are to all intents and purposes of the “sound baits”, aimed at the simulation, as faithful as possible, of birdsong. UIT, distancing itself from the imitative hypothesis and pursuing the idea of the “sound trap”, sets up a table with birdcalls and plays on the level of maximum counterfeiting and sound camouflage. The use of these references has no pretensions or descriptive purposes with the sound of nature, the identification with it passes rather through the attempt to reconstruct a sound environment that reproduces the acousmatic experience of a walk in a wood, the disorientation due to the perception of sounds to which one is unable to attribute a concrete source, a precise physical image.
