Sunroof is a British duo composed of Daniel Miller, founder of Mute Records, and Gareth Jones, a renowned producer and sound engineer known for his collaborations with Depeche Mode, Wire, and Erasure. Their partnership, which began in the 1980s during Depeche Mode recordings, matured into experimental projects culminating in the album Electronic Music Improvisations Volume 1 (2021).
This work inaugurates a series of records based on improvisations with modular synthesizers, recorded without subsequent processing, capturing the essence of the creative moment. Their compositions, concise and intense, blend drones, rhythmic sequences, and timbral modulations, combining analog minimalism with digital experimentation. Their sounds evoke influences from electronic pioneers like Delia Derbyshire and Morton Subotnick, bridging tradition and modernity.
Sunroof represents a model of artistic freedom, exploring soundscapes that defy genre conventions. Their works celebrate the beauty of improvisation, offering sonic experiences that intertwine timbral exploration, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to the history of electronic music.
